How to Brew the Perfect Cup of Pour Over Coffee (Beginner Friendly)

There’s something magical about brewing your own cup of pour over coffee. It’s a ritual that lets you savor every note in your beans — bright, balanced, and delicious. If you’re new to pour over or just want to sharpen your technique, this guide will walk you through every step to make your perfect cup at home.

Step 1: Gather Your Gear
To get started, you’ll need:

  • A pour over dripper (like a V60 or Chemex)
  • Freshly ground coffee — medium-coarse grind works best
  • Filter paper
  • Hot water (around 195–205°F)
  • A scale and timer (optional but helpful)

Step 2: Prep Your Filter and Coffee
Place the filter in your dripper and rinse it with hot water to remove any paper taste and warm the equipment. Add 20 grams of freshly ground coffee per 300 ml of water for a well-balanced cup.

Step 3: The Bloom
Slowly pour just enough water (about 40 ml) to wet the grounds and let it sit for 30 seconds. This “bloom” allows trapped gases to escape, prepping your coffee for full extraction.

Step 4: The Pour
Pour the rest of the water slowly in a spiral motion, keeping the water level consistent. Aim for a total brew time of 3–4 minutes.

Step 5: Enjoy Your Coffee!
Remove the dripper and enjoy your cup. Taste the bright, clean flavors that a pour over brings out — perfect for lighter roasts like our Theory Light or a balanced medium roast like Clarity Blend.

Why Pour Over?
Pour over coffee highlights the clarity and complexity in your beans, letting you experience notes that other brewing methods might mask. It’s a simple way to elevate your daily ritual.
